History of Rabat Airport

During World War II, the airport was a military airstrip for the Royal Air Force and the United States Army Air Forces. Between April and June of 1943, the airfield was used by the 319th Bombardment Group, which flew B-26 Marauders for a short time.

After the American fighting units left in the middle of 1943, the airfield became a staging area and landing strip for planes belonging to the Air Transport Command en route from Casablanca to Algiers. Control of airfields was handed over to civilian administration after the war ended.

The airport served as the primary location for the 5th and 316th Air Divisions of the United States Air Force's Strategic Air Command (SAC) during the early stages of the Cold War. Until the United States Air Force's withdrawal from Morocco in 1957, the airfield was used by various SAC aircraft, primarily B-47 Stratojets and KC-97 Stratofreighters.
